The Vall Companys Group continues to make progress in its commitment to environmental sustainability in the Teruel town of Calamocha, where it has earmarked nearly 6 million euros for the installation of photovoltaic generation systems from 2020. This investment is part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and optimise the use of resources at its Jamcal and Comercial Logística de Calamocha (CLC) plants, dedicated to drying and marketing hams.
Solar energy to move towards self-consumption
The main commitment in this energy transformation has been the incorporation of solar panels, which already cover up to 35% of the electricity consumption of the facilities during the summer months. In winter, with less solar radiation, this coverage is maintained at around 20%. Between 2020 and 2024, the Group has invested approximately 6 million euros to achieve the maximum possible self-consumption, reducing the impact on the environment considerably, as well as dependence on conventional energy sources.
Biomass: a sustainable alternative to gas
In parallel to solar energy, Jamcal has incorporated biomass systems to replace the use of gas in its production processes. Since 2023, a first biomass boiler has been in operation, reducing gas consumption by 30% in 2024. This May, a second boiler has been commissioned, which is expected to achieve a 60% reduction in gas consumption from the second half of 2025. This change represents a decarbonisation equivalent to 2.3 GWh per year.
Technological efficiency in refrigeration and reuse of heat
Another of the Group's strategic lines of action is the renewal of cooling systems at Jamcal. The motors in the storage chambers are being progressively replaced with energy-efficient models. In a first phase, the motors in 13 chambers will be renewed, with the aim of extending this modernisation to a total of 58. This measure will reduce electricity consumption by around 2 GWh per year, which represents 25% of the consumption not covered by solar energy.
The company has also implemented a heat recovery system in its industrial processes. In the first quarter of 2024, a 5,000-litre storage tank was installed to reuse the heat from compressor 1, allowing water to be preheated for cleaning and sanitary use at temperatures between 30 and 40°C. In the second quarter, the system was completed with pipe insulation, improving the overall energy efficiency of the process.
Commitment to people and the working environment
Jamcal and CLC, which employ around 400 workers in Calamocha, are part of the Vall Companys Group, which this year has been recognised as a Top Employer in Spain for the fifth consecutive year. This prestigious certificate, awarded after a rigorous evaluation process by the Top Employers Institute, consolidates the group as one of the benchmark employers in the country and reaffirms its commitment to talent, inclusion and professional well-being. The distinction recognises the Vall Companys Group's excellence in creating innovative, flexible and people-centred work environments, backed by the strength of its People Development and Management policies.
